Limnonectes

suboliferus

Western Guardian Frog

Limnonectes suboliverus inhabits the forest floor of primary and secondary forest. The species is is a lowland species (below approx. 400 m a.s.l.) of western Sarawak.  It is relatively small, approx. 26—36 mm in snout-vent length. The type locality is Kubah National Park, Frog Pond.

The dorsum in these frogs is finely shagreened, featuring prominent longitudinal dorsolateral glandular ridges. The interorbital distance is equal to or greater than the width of the upper eyelid. The toes are not fully webbed. A horseshoe-shaped dermal ridge is present in the middle of the dorsum, at a level of just behind the insertion of the arms. The color pattern is generally brown to orange-brown above with characteristic markings of face and snout, an interorbital bar is formed. The chevron or horse-shoe shaped tubercle on back and area below dorsolateral fold are dark brown, as seen in the images. Banding on forearm and hindlimb is present. Gular region and belly yellowish.

According to Dehling et al. (2025), his species has very extensively webbed toes, a curved supratympanic fold, and a pineal spot that is usually clearly visible—rarely indistinct—and located slightly in front of the anterior edge of the upper eyelid. The vomerine ridges inside the mouth are long and widely separated. The postpalpebral ridges (starting behind eye lids and medial to dorsolateral lines) are weakly developed and inconspicuous, as are the lumbar and median ridges that occur in Guardina Frog species in general. In males, the ventral side of the snout is covered with evenly scattered, tiny glandular pits.

The call is a series of up to 11 "quek" notes. There is an intervall of several minutes between calls.

We found tadpoles in shallow puddles with sandy-silty bottom on trails, and in quiet sections of small, slow moving streams. The tadpole is moderately dorsoventrally compressed. The tail is twice the length of the trunk and the tail fin is low, giving the tadpole a slender appearance in side view. The tail tip is pointed. Tadpoles may develop a medial stripe in advanced stages.
