Bornean Families
Genus: Megophryidae
Megophryidae
Litter Frogs
The Megophryidae is a group of frogs with some archaic anatomical and behavioral features. The sizes range from just over 20 mm in some Leptobrachella species to 125 mm females of Pelobatrachus nasutus.
Bornean megophryids are leaf litter frogs. Species of Leptobrachium and Pelobatrachus have broad heads and are capable of swallowing large prey such as large cockroaches, snails, small skinks and other frogs.
All Bornean megophryids need streams for their tadpoles. The larvae can be generallists (Leptobrachium) or can have highly derived anatomical features and life styles (Sarawakiphrys, Pelobatrachus, Leptobrachella).
The taxonomy of the southeast Asian megophryids has not stabalized yet and genera and assignments of species to genera have changed repeatedly over the past 20 years, much to the confusion of non-taxonomists.
