Limnonectes

batulawensis

Sarawak Mountain Fanged Frog

This species has an average snout-vent length of 49 mm in males and 54 mm in females.

Limnonectes batulwensis has been reported from the Bario area, Miri District, Sarawak. Currently it is assumed to be endemic to that area. It is sympatric with L. barioensis in Bario and L. separatus in Mulu. Apart from genetics, all three species are distinguished by some body proportions that are not easily measured in the field.

According to Matsui et al. 2024, the species can be distinguished from its relatives by the combination of several characters: Ridges are present on the dorsal surface of the tibia as well as  scattered small, low warts. The tip of the third finger forms a large disk slightly wider than the basal phalanx, while the tip of the fourth toe expands into a large disk, with its width exceeding that of the basal phalanx. Furthermore, the fourth toe is broadly webbed to the disk. The head is long, the forelimb is medium, the hindlimb is medium, and the tibia is medium-sized. The dorsal surface of the tibia is dark brown, lacking darker markings. The first finger is slightly longer than the second, while the outer edge of the second finger and both edges of the third fingers possess freely movable, narrow ridges of skin. The fourth toe disk is significantly wider than the third finger disk, and the inner and outer webbing of the fourth toe has been excised.

Ecology and natural history are mostly unkown.
