Limnonectes

finchi

Rough Guardian Frog

Limnonectes finchi has previously been considered one species, however, a revision suggested to recognize two species in the finchi-species grpup: L. finchi and L. gyrinophorus. Type locality for L. finchi is Kalabakan, Tawau District, Sabah. The distribution covers northeast Borneo from sea level to approximately 1100 m.

Limnonectes finchi reaches a snout vent length of 39 mm snout-vent length in males and 46 mm in females.

The odontoid processes on the lower jaw are low and inconspicuous in both sexes. The dorsum is granular, bearing interrupted longitudinal rows of elongate tubercles. The interorbital distance is shorter than the width of the upper eyelid. A distinctly visible, oval-shaped pineal spot is present at the level of the anterior edge of the eye. The toes are not fully webbed, and a horseshoe-shaped dermal ridge is situated in the middle of the dorsum, just posterior to the arm insertion.

This species can be distinguished from L. gyrinophorus by the combination of: The dorsal surface bears a moderate number of enlarged tubercles that are irregularly and somewhat densely scattered, while the area around the cloaca lacks tubercles. The ventral skin on the head and chest is barely thickened, and the chest fold is indistinct. The loreal region is oblique. The vomerine processes are equipped with 7–9 teeth and are positioned nearly in contact with each other medially, separated by less than one-sixth the length of an individual process, and spaced from the choana by approximately one-fourth the length of a process. The hindlimbs are long. The tibiotarsal joint extending well beyond the snout in appressed leg. The first finger is relatively short, approximately equal in length to the second and fourth fingers. A low dermal fold is present on the postaxial side of Toe V.

The advertisement call consists of a long, rising trill made up of 31 to 34 notes, lasting approx. 2 seconds.

The tadpole are dorsoventrally depressed. The tail is fairly long and the tail fins are moderately developed. The tail tip is moderately pointed.
