Bario Fanged Frog
In the original description (Matsui eta al. 2024) the distributional range of this species is currently known as the Miri Division (Bario, 1000 m a.s.l.) in Sarawak and the Interior Division in Sabah (Mahua/Tambunan, 750 m a.s.l.). At Bario the species is sympatric with L. batulawensis, L. mocquardi at Mahua and Tambunan, Sabah, and L. paulyambuni at Mahua, Sabah.
This is a medium-sized species, in which males measure approximately 54 mm in snout-vent length and females 51 mm. So. sexes do not seem to differ much in size but males have relatively larger heads.
The new species can be distinguished from its relatives by the tibia, which is covered with warts of various sizes, especially on the anterodorsal side. The first finger is slightly longer than the second, and the tip of the third finger forms a small disk, which is not much wider than the basal phalanx. The fourth toe is broadly webbed up to the disk, with the inner and outer webbing being little excised. It has a short head, medium-sized forelimbs and hindlimbs, and a short tibia. The dorsal skin is extremely folded, with networks of wrinkles running in all directions. Small warts are scattered only posteriorly on the body. The outer edge of the third finger has freely movable, narrow ridges of skin. The tip of the fourth toe is swollen into a disk of moderate size, which is slightly wider than the basal phalanx and much wider than the third finger disk. The back of the frog has been reported as clay brown with small dark brown markings.
