Genus: Hylarana
Hylarana
White-lipped Frogs
Hylarana is a large genus of Asian ranid frogs. There has been considerable taxonomic instability with respect to the contents of this genus. Some time ago its species had been rearranged into several smaller genera (Chalcorana, Pulcharan, Abavorana, Hylarana, Indosylvirana) but then recently lumped together again. Of course, such back and forth taxonomic arrangements are quite confusing particularly when reading the literature of the past decades. The reader is advised to consider the time when any information source on these frogs has been published.
In terms of biology, some species of Hylarana are associated with stagnant waters such as ponds, whereas other species live close to streams and rivers, depending on the specializations and requirments of their tadpoles. Hylarana species typically are medium to large in size.
