Leptobrachella

dringi

Dring’s Slender Litter Frog

Leptolalax dringi was originally described based on specimens collected by Julian Dring at Camp 4 on Gunung Mulu (Sarawak, Malaysia), at approx. 1800 m a.s.l. The species inhabits only Sabah and the northeastern parts of Sarawak. It seems to prefer mid to high altitudes (1200–1800 m asl).

Males reach 26–31 mm in snout-vent length, females grow bigger and reach up to 38 mm. The coloration is mostly grey and brown with dark markings. Sympatrically, but lower in elevation, L. fritinniens also occurs at Gunung Mulu. L. dringi differs from L. fritinniens in smaller size, a bright red upper third of iris (versus reddish grey), rel. wider interorbital space, and relatively greater eye-to-nostril distance.

The tadpole of L. dringi is unknown, but we expect it to be very similar to the tadpoles of the other species in the genus. See L. gracilis page for a general impression of Leptobrachella (Leptolalax) tadpoles.

Reproduction takes place in small to mid-sized streams with rocky bottom, where tadpoles live in interstices in the sediment.
