Leptophryne

borbonica

Hour-glass Toad

According to Inger and Stuebing (2005) this toad is found in lowlands up to 400 m asl in seepage areas. However, we found Leptophryne borbonica also in higher elevations up to 1100 m asl in the Bario highlands and at Mt. Penrissen.

This species still needs more scientific attention. It is distributed from Thailand to Sumatra, Java and Borneo. It seems likely that the currently recognized species is composed of several species yet to be delimited. For taxonomy see ASW

The body is slender in both sexes. Hind limbs are very long, making this toad a good jumper. Distinct cross marks on the back that resemble an hour-glass in shape make identification easy.

Size of adults: 30 mm in males, 40–50 mm snout-vent length in females.
