Zhangixalus

Zhang's Tree Frogs

I

In recent decades, several formerly large amphibian genera have been split into smaller, monophyletic groups as new evidence—particularly genetic data—has become available. The same process affected the Asian tree frog genus Rhacophorus. Zhangixalus is one of the newly recognized genera whose species were previously assigned to Rhacophorus. According to the Amphibian Species of the World (ASW), Zhangixalus currently contains more than four dozen species distributed widely across southern and southeastern Asia.

Some controversy remains regarding the generic boundaries, particularly concerning the separation of Zhangixalus from Leptomantis on both genetic and morphological grounds. On Borneo, only a single species is currently recognized: Z. dulitensis.
