Borneo Cascade Frogs
A small group of stream-adapted frogs, Meristogenys is endemic to Borneo. Species in this genus are tightly associated with fast-flowing stream habitats. Their calls consist of short, high-pitched whistles that stand out clearly against the background noise of rushing water. The frogs are notable for their extremely long hind limbs, which make them excellent jumpers.
The tadpoles are highly specialized for life on submerged rocks in strong currents. They possess a unusual morphological adaptation: a gastric sucker (gastromyzophorous organ) that allows them to adhere securely to surfaces (also in Huia). Their jaw sheaths are distinctly ribbed.
