Rentapia:
everetti
Everett's Tree Toad
Rentapia everetti is a medium- to moderately large-sized toad. It is very distinctive in coloration but is seldom encountered, likely due to its arboreal habits. The species inhabits mid-elevation forests—both primary and secondary—up to approximately 1,100 m a.s.l. It is distributed widely across Borneo in suitable habitats. The type locality is Gunung Kinabalu, Sarawak.
Adult males reach about 70 mm in snout–vent length, while females grow to roughly 95 mm. The snout is short and rounded in dorsal view, and appears truncated in lateral profile. The limbs and digits are moderately long. The parotoid glands are distinct and rounded. The eardrum is visible but indistinct. The fingers are long and only slightly expanded at the tips. The toes are fully webbed except for the fourth toe, which remains free at the distal end; the fleshy webbing carries the general coloration pattern. The skin is warty, and in fully grown individuals, some warts—particularly on the dorsum and upper surfaces of the hind limbs—terminate in pointed, keratinized tips.
Coloration typically ranges from brown-green to green, combined with distinct dark brown blotches. On the limbs, these blotches form cross-bars. Some juveniles were reported to lack the bright green tones and were predominantly brown, which may suggest that young individuals pass through a more terrestrial phase before becoming arboreal. However, intraspecific variation remains poorly understood and warrants further study.
The tadpoles of Rentapia everetti are currently unknown.
