The currently distinguished species (ASW) of this group of bufonids occur from Pakistan east to China and south to Borneo, Java, Sumatra, and Bali. Duttaphrynus species are typical toads. They are stocky, relatively short-legged, and terrestrial. The name honors Sushil Kumar Dutta, a herpetologist from India. Duttaphrynus melanostictus is an introduced species that adapts well to agricultural land and human settlements from small villages to cities. It does not enter deep in to the forest.
