Philautus acutus is a brown bush frog of medium size (approximately 26 mm in males). This species was described by Julian Dring in 1987 from mossy forest, 1,300 m asl at Gunung Mulu. 

Males call widely dispered from vegetation (0.5–4 m above ground). Calls are a series of shrill 'gree' notes. Details of the reproductive biology of this species remain unknown.
